King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910), also known as King Rama 5 (reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).

The city and province of Mukdahan lies hard against the Mekong River, in the north east of Thailand. The provincial hall of this province is found near the city centre, behind the City Pillar Shrine. The two are separated by a large, grassed area. The King is depicted in what could be considered his standard guise. He is standing, with his left hand resting on his sword, in military garb, facing out looking towards the shrine. A slight difference is his lack of a pith helmet, found on most of his statues, and something the King in life enjoyed wearing, so I understand.

The statue appears life-sized, or possibly slightly larger. Most likely the statue is composed of bronze, while the plinth is undoubtably composed of stone. There is a badly faded plaque on the plinth, if this follows the usual design it is a biography of the King. As with most statues in Thailand this is also a shrine. Locals do come by to pay their respects to their former King.

A contemporary point. When I visited the provincial hall in August 2011, the interior of the hall had been abandoned, due to arson carried out a year earlier by the Red Shirt protesters. It is not impossible that plans are afoot to build a new hall, possibly elsewhere in the province.
