The town of Matthews set up "Fisherman Garfield", paying homage to the local river and bridges. The town's statue was originally placed just east of the Cumberland Covered Bridge. Plans were to place the statue in August, 2008 but it was installed during the summer of 2009. This Garfield statue depicts a fruitful day of fishing. Garfield stands, adorned in fishing gear, with a large "frightened" fish in net over his back as he stands proud on his fishing tackle box atop a large boulder.
*Update*
The statue has been recently moved to the Matthews Community Center.

MATTHEWS, Ind. — A northern Indiana town’s statue of Garfield the cat is being relocated to save it from vandalism.
Matthews Town Council President David Loer says that vandals had damaged the statue at its former location near a covered bridge in the town, so officials decided to move it a less isolated area at the town hall.
Loer says vandals chipped the statue by throwing rocks at it and broke the fishing pole out of the cat’s hand despite the presence of security cameras.
Loer says the statue is currently away for repairs but he hopes to have it installed at its new town hall site by July 1, 2011.
