The new Three Mills Lock controls the river above Three Mills at a navigable, but flowing, depth and 'locks-out' the tide. It has created a green gateway for barges entering the Olympic Park, helping to remove thousands of lorry journeys.

The lock is 62m long and 8m wide, with sluice gates, a public footbridge, 'fish pass' and a twin sluice on Three Mills Wall River. As the River Lee is tidal the lock is there to prevent the river from "draining" when the River Thames reaches low water.

Two of Tony Gee’s marine projects, Three Mills Lock and Loxwood Lock and Bridge, have achieved success at the 2011 Waterways Renaissance Awards.
Three Mills Lock, London’s first new lock for 20 years, won the Design and Construction category at the ceremony, which recognises exceptional schemes that use canals and rivers to enrich people’s lives across the UK. Working on behalf of VolkerStevin, Tony Gee acted as lead designers for the new tidal lock, fixed adjustable weirs and fish pass.
The new lock opens up the Bow Back Rivers, a network of waterways in and around the Lower Lea Valley. This creates a green gateway for freight barges for the first time in 50 years and in legacy will open up the waterways in and around the Olympic Park to leisure boats. The scheme also received runner-up prizes for the Flood Risk Management and Area-Based Regeneration Awards.
Loxwood Canal Crossing and Lock won the Community Category Award and was commended in the Design and Construction category. The new bridge removes a major obstacle to the full restoration of “London’s lost route to the Sea.”
The Wey & Arun Canal Trust initially commissioned Tony Gee to carry out a feasibility study to investigate various options for the construction of the bridge, the new lock and the earthworks required to lower the canal. Subsequently Tony Gee carried out the detailed design of the bridge and the earth retaining structures and also acted as the CDM Co-ordinator for the scheme
