The Persian Gulf War began on August 2, 1990 with Iraqi forces overrunning Kuwait. It ended seven months later with the surrender of Iraq on February 28, 1991. Shortly thereafter, on April 18, 1991, the Northampton Chamber of Commerce placed a memorial plaque on the Old Hampshire County Courthouse lawn at the base of the pre-existing flagpole honoring the men and women who served in the armed forces during the conflict. April 18th of that year was the 216th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War and a holiday in Massachusetts.
