A memorial to those of the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion who fell during the years 1953 - 2004. The plaque reads:-

Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion
(Former Infantry Boys BN)

This unit took selected boy entrants aged
14 to 16 years and trained them to be warrant
officers and senior nco's (non-commissioned officers) for the brigade of
guards and the infantry of the line. These ranks
form the backbone of the British regimental
system providing leadership, discipline and
organisation. They are the custodians of the
traditions which give each regiment its
individual character. The concept was a
resounding success. Most of the boys went on
to serve with great distinction with many
achieving commissioned rank. The infantry
junior leaders battalion was the senior nco's
sandhurst and its positive impact was felt
throughout the British army for some 55 years.
The battalion was granted the freedom of
Oswestry in 1971, a unique honour for a boys
training unit.

Tuxford/Harrogate 1952 - 1954 Plymouth 1954 - 1960
Oswestry 1960 - 1975 Shorncliffe 1975 - 1985
