The city of Mukdahan lies in far north eastern Thailand, on the Mekong River. One of the older and leading wats in the city and province is Wat Sri Mongkol Tai. According to a tourist information sign this Wat was first constructed in 1742, and subsequently redesigned and renamed as politics and fate dictated.

The Wat consists of a central assembly hall, with the historic Buddha image found on this site, which caused the city to be constructed, behind here are quarters for monks, and around the walls of the temple are burial stupas of the more prominent former citizens. Easily found opposite the city ferry pier.
