Surrounded by a circle of wrought iron fencing and a circular walkway, this monument is dedicated to the Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Conflict. At its center is a "Battle Cross" consisting of boots alongside a vertical rifle with a battle helmet atop. Two wooden silhouettes of soldiers are kneeling in prayer before it.
A bronze plaque mounted on a post gives this quotation from Major General John A. "Black Jack" Logan, U.S. Army 1861-1865, which reads:
"We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance...let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, No ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic."
Born on February 9, 1826, John Logan served in the Mexican-American War as a 2nd Lieutenant. He entered the Civil War as a Colonel in the Union Army, leaving at the end of the War as a Major General. His career in politics included:
Illinois House of Representatives: 1853-54, 1857
U.S. House of Representatives: 1858. 1860, 1867-1871
U.S. Senate: 1871-1877, 1879-1886
He is known to be instrumental in the establishment of Memorial Day. He was known during his military career as "Black Jack" due to his black eyes, dark hair and swarthy complexion. Many schools and locations have been named for him, including Logan County, north of Oklahoma City. He passed away on December 26, 1886.
