He was the oldest son of Wladyslaw, Duke of Opole-Racibórz, by his wife Euphemia, daughter of Wladyslaw Odonic, Duke of Greater Poland.
In internal politics he pursued vigorous policies. Mieszko carried out intensive colonizing policies and founded many settlements.
Mieszko was known for his generosity to the church. Thanks to him, the construction was completed of the Dominican convent at Oswiecim
In 1931 the Polish painter and sculptor Jan Raszka made a sculpture of Mieszko I in Cieszyn.
The statue is located on a wooded hillside with overlooking of a border river Olse. The statue is made from copper and it was built on the site where once stood the monument of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. During WWII the statue was removed by the Nazis, but after the WWII returned to its place.
Immediately after the war, on the granite socle at the base of the obelisk the following inscription was carved: ‘To the fighters for freedom and democracy who fell in the war with Hitlerism – from the Polish Workers’ Party. Peace to their memory!’
