The corner stone was laid in 1863 and the first congregation was mostly ladies including Laura Drake the wife of Col. Edwin L. Drake (the man who drilled the first commercial oil well just outside of town).
The corner stone of the church was laid at the exact center of the city and when the building was finished it was the first permanent place of worship in the town.
Please be sure to check out the link at the bottom of the page that goes to the churches website so that you can see what there beautiful stained glass windows look like.
If you check out the pictures I will be posting with this waymark you will see not only the outside of the church but also a history plaque that sits outside the building explaining some of the history of the church.
Much of my information comes from the city's history plaque and the rest is knowledge that I have learned first hand by being a member of the church.
If you would like to see inside the church and it is locked you can check at the office in the addition at the back of the church or you could attend a service on Sunday as all are indeed welcome. The web page says services are at 10:00am but they are at 10:30.
There is a Community Soup Kitchen Serving Lunch Every Tuesday at Noon in the church parish hall (free will offering if you would like to pay and free if not)
