Á volta da Torre de Belem means around Belem Tower, and, the book is about the history of the people and the places arount the tower.
The firts part of this book is about the evolution of the west part of Lisbon, from Alcantara to Algés parishes (the tower is located in the middle of this two parishes) in a chronologycal perspective. This analysis focus on everything from the road stones to the people that walked on them, the demographic growth, the economic, thecnical and other conditions that lead to that evolution.
The second part is about the Tagus defense (both military and sanitary/public health).
Military with focus on the fortified system built along the river and around it with particular focus on the Belem Tower.
Sanitary with focus on the alrge history of attempts to prevent the contagious desieses and epidemics brought by the sailors from the "New World" and the prevention facilities at the time, the Porto Brandão and trafaria Lazareto and the Belém Health house.
