William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley was the son of Richard Cecil, owner of the Burghley estate. He was born on 13 September 1521 and died on 4 August 1598.

William Cecil served Queen Elizabeth I as advisor for most of her reign and in parliament and held the offices of Lord Privy Seal, Lord High Treasurer and Secretary of State. It is suggested that at times he was so powerful and his influence so great that his will would on occasion prevail over that of the Queen.

After his death, possibly from a stroke or heart attack, he was buried in a spectacular tomb in St Martin's Church, Stamford.
