It is difficult to establish exactly where this name comes from.

It is certainly east to be drawn into thinking that this has a military reference, after all, not far from here is 'The Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn. However, this is in an industrial part of the country where unionism was very popular and trade unions may have had names such as 'The United Cut Nail Makers of Great Britain Protection Society'.
