This sphinx is found on one of two fountains on either side of the entrance to the Main Branch of the New York City Public Library at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street.

Two fountains are located on either side of the entrance to the Main Branch of the New York City Public Library. They were designed and sculpted by Frederick William MacMonnies between 1914-1920. The fountain on the right side of the entrance is entitled "The Truth" and depicts a partially draped male figure seated on a sphinx. The inscription reads, 'BUT ABOVE ALL THINGS - TRUTH - BEARETH AWAY -THE VICTORY.'
The artist, Macmonnies was born in Brooklyn in 1863 and died in New York City in 1937. Read more about him and this fountain at (
