It was a source of water for the townspeople for their livestock and household needs and was referred to as the "Town Pump" by the residents. They carried water back to their houses with pails or cream cans or pulled up in their wagons to fill barrels. The town pump became a popular meeting place where children played and adults met to head off for other activities such as swimming or ice skating on the Big Sioux River.
In the 1920's water lines were installed and the much used pump was removed and the hole filled in.
