On Saturday, May 8, the city dedicated a lighted
35-foot flagpole and a memorial marker at the new
city park at Sixth and Quincy Street. A time cap-
sule was sealed inside the marker. It included the
signatures of 3,400 citizens, U.S. President Gerald
R. Ford's signature and his signature and seal tie
clasp, a set of 1976 currency, 4 bicentennial 13-cent
stamps canceled May 8, 1976, correspondence from
the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-
ter Day Saints, State Representative Virgil Roberts'
business card, A Declaration of Independence place-
mat, a bicentennial button, an Onalaska "We've Got
the Spirit" sticker, an Onalaska Bicentennial Musi-
cale ticket, and a set of 5 "Bicentennial Times
Newsletters."
