The covered walkway between the manse and the church is dedicated to members of the congregation who fought and died in World War I. Their names and battle locations are inscribed in the stone.
I discovered this location via a book discussing Chicago statuary alcoves. Unfortunately the church website contains no helpful additional information. I did find this from the Armour Institute of Technology - Armour engineer (Volume 14) at (

"...three persons connected with the Architectural Department of
Armour Institute; that is Mr. Thomas E. Tallmadge,
formerly faculty member, teaching design and now
for many years special lecturer in History of Archi-
teeture; Mr. Emil Zettler, special instructor in Archi-
tectural Modeling: and Mr. V. S. Watson of the Class
of 1900. The Doughboy is a memorial figure sculp-
tured by Mr. Zettler, placed at the corner of the
cloister of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Evanston.
Illinois, which is the joint architectural work of Tall-
madge & Watson. " published 1923
