As of the 2000 census, Vilas had a population of 19, but now has a population of 20. It is located just 3 miles west of Howard, the County Seat of Miner County.
German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Irish immigrants settled the area and the town was incorporated in 1910.
Vilas was on the junction of two major railroads: the Milwaukee Road which served the town from 1881 until 1972 and the Chicago & Northwestern.
