July 15, 1882 a renegade band of Apache Indians struck a homestead wounding several residents. The first one to die, John Meadows, is the first one buried in this cemetery. His son died soon afterwards from injuries in the attack and is buried next to him.
The cemetery is currently well maintained and still in use. It is owned and held in trust by the Payson Pioneer Cemetery Board, which is part of the Payson Woman's Club.
This website, has many stories of its residents. The graveyard is 5 acres in size with approximately 400 graves in it.
