The bluebird started out as an orange bird that sat on the side of the road in Vilano Beach in the 1940s advertising orange juice to northerners passing through. Newt Haley owned two motels on Coastal Highway, and his wife Wilda bought the bird, placed it in front of one of the motels and painted it blue. It became known as the "Bluebird of Happiness." For a while, it was moved to a private home and became a lawn ornament.

As part of its public art program, the Main Street Group brought the 8-foot bird to a sandy lot in the Vilano Beach Town Center in 2008 where it stands today, ready to pose for vacation photos.
