Örebro Castle - Örebro, Sweden - Philatelic Photographs on Waymarking.com

The first defence tower of Örebro Castle was build in the latter half of the 13th century. The castle was built on a very strategic place, where major trading routes crossed the Svartån River. It was able to control the traffic and the trade to and from the inner parts of Sweden.

Within the next 100 years the defence was strengthened by the addition of another tower. The castle came under the control of King Gustav Wasa. The House of Wasa continued to expand the fortification. In 1573, Duke Charles, who later was to become King Charles IX, rebuilt the castle. He tore down the medieval walls and reconstructed the a renaissance castle, surrounded by the round towers, that exist today. The castle was completed in 1627.

When the fortunes of the House of Wasa declined the structure was used for storage and as a jail. In the middle of the 18th century, it was restructured according to a design by Carl Hårleman. The renaissance style was replaced by a more classical design. The castle became the residence of the regional governors. During the Diet of 1810 King Charles XIII lived in the castle.

The castle was refurbished early in the 20th century and used as a residence and office for the regional governor. In 1992 the castle was opened to the public.
