Located at the southern end of Floriana, the Porte des Bombes is an ornamental gate and part of the Floriana Lines, which formed the outer defensive walls of Valletta.
It was originally built between 1697 and 1720, as a simple single-arched structured with a drawbridge, under Grand Master Ramon Perellos de Rocafu, whose coat of arms appears above the gate.
A northern gate, the Gate of Our Lady, was built at the same time but has been destroyed.
In 1868 the archway was doubled and the curtain on either side demolished, to accommodate increased traffic.
The gate has recently been fully restored.
