Benjamin Franklin, one of America's founding fathers was a politician, dipomat, scientist, writer and publisher.
Here he is celebrated in his role as a printer.
The bronze statue depicts Franklin standing with arms outstretched- as if speaking to an audience or about to greet someone. The statue is roughly life-sized...perhaps a little larger. Franklin is wearing an unbuttoned waistcoat fastened at the collar. In his left hand, he carries a Monday copy of the Pennsylvania Gazette. He stands on a roughly 7 foot fluted stone pedestal.
The inscription on the base reads:
"BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
1706-1790
PRINTER PATRIOT
PHILOSOPHER
STATESMAN
PRESENTED BY
ALBERT D'GROOT
TO THE
PRESS AND PRINTERS
OF THE
CITY OF NEW YORK
UNVEILED
JANUARY 17, 1872
ERNST PLASSMAN, SCULPTOR"
The area was once known as Printing House Square.
