The city is located in south San Diego county. It's above the city of Chula Vista. The city had a 2010 population of 58,582. The city was founded in 1868 and was incorporated 19 years later. The areaa was known as El Rancho del Rey under the Spaniards. Under Mexico it was renamed Rancho de la Nacion.
The city hall is located on National City Blvd. A large walk way takes people from National City Blvd to the actual two story building. An archway above the walkway proclaims the building "City of National City." Located near city hall is the city's library. Across from city hall is the police headquarters.
