The Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg was the first Catholic Church in the County. It was founded in 1869 by Father James Fitzpatrick. Father Fitz as he would later be known, was murdered in 1879 in an apparent murder by the local Sioux Tribe led by Chief Dancing Bear.
However, the Sioux were never charged with the crime because the circumstances surrounding the incident appeared to frame Dancing Bear. Father Fitz was not on cordial terms with the Sioux, but he was disliked even more by the locals for his fire and brimstone speeches condemning the drunkenness that washed over the young town.
This memorial is located in the southeast corner of the cemetery and is visible from the road.
