Johnny Sack was born in 1884 and came to the United States in 1890 when his family immigrated and settled in South Bend, Indiana. Johnny arrived in the Island Park area in 1909 and worked at many different jobs until he began making is living building furniture and cabins. He obtained a lease for a cabin site from the U.S. Forest Service in 1929. The cabin was built over a three year period beginning in 1932. After Johnny’s death in 1957, the cabin was to be removed along with all the other private cabins in the area, but through the efforts of interested citizens it was preserved. In addition to the cabin there is also a small pump house and waterwheel. The cabin was placed on the National Register on April 19, 1979 and opened as an interpretive center in 1980. More details can be found at the secondary website below. The cabin is open daily from mid-June to mid-September.
