It was built in 1872 on the site of an old French factory to house the family of Nawab Abdul Ghani, born in 1830 of Kashmiri descent, who was the most influential person in East Bengal in the last half of the 19th century. Unlike most zanzibars (landowners) he was Muslim but participated in Hindu festivals. His son Nawab Ahsanullah (for whom Ahsan Manzil was named) died suddenly in 1901 without a will. Under Islamic law the estate was broken into nine parts and Ahsanulla's son, Salimullah, got only one part, and although he resided in the Pink Palace, he was reduced to being a relatively poor man whereas his grandfather who had so many land holdings that most Dhaka belonged to him had ruled like a king.
Salimullah contributed more than anyone to muslim schools and founded Dhaka Medical School. Lord Curzon stayed in the Palace when he visited Dhaka. The palace was restored in late 1980s aided by photos of each of the 23 rooms taken during the high point of the palace's history. One of the most interesting buildings in Dhaka.
