The Hindu community of Old Dhaka is concentrated in this small street and this mosque is perched among small stores in the middle of the street. The Hindu street is also known as Shankharia Bazar and is lined on either side with ancient houses, garlands of lurid orange marigolds and dark doorways leading to matchbox-sized shops and workshops. Shankharis (Hindu artisans) came here over 300 years ago but now-a-days their art is slowly dying out.
