Lal means "red" so this is known also as the Red Fort in Dhaka. The Fort stands as a sign of the Mughals' increasing power in Bengal during the late 17th century. Construction began in 1678 under the direction of Prince Muhammad Azam. He was sent to another post so he didn't finish it. Ten years later, Shaista Khan also didn't finish it. There was a malaria outbreak and his two daughters died from it so he fled the region and didn't finish the intended construction. The grounds include the Mausoleum of the two girls. According to early illustrations of the fort, the Buriganga river flowed right in front of the southern gate. Today there are three main buildings on the site and the fort has been restored. A small mosque, the governor's residence and the tomb of Pari Bibi the oldest of the two girls. Popular place for young couples who like to picnic on the lawn of the fort.
