One thousand kilometres or so south, from the bustling metropolis of Bangkok, is the small province and capital city of Satun. As Satun is one of the four Thai provinces with a Muslim majority (though without a separatist movement as the other three have), there is an unsurprising lack of Buddhist wats in the city.

Wat Chanathip Chaloem was the first wat constructed in the city (though there is no statement of this at the site) in the year 1882. It is located near the city centre. It is stylistically different from most other Thai wats. The Ubosot (ordination hall), which was built in 1930, is a Thai-styled two-storey building, not the usual gold, single story building. The first storey is a brick building used as a preaching hall. The second storey is a wooden building for religious practice by Buddhist monks. The temple has been declared an environmental preservation zone.
