Art & Bronze Fdy Chicago (Base front:) YOU CAN FOOL ALL THE PEOPLE/PART OF THE TIME AND PART OF THE/PEOPLE ALL THE TIME BUT YOU CAN-/NOT FOOL ALL THE PEOPLE ALL THE/TIME/SPOKEN IN ADDRESS IN/CLINTON JULY 27, 1858 BY/ABRAHAM LINCOLN/I MUST STAND WITH ANYBODY/THAT STANDS RIGHT STAND WITH/HIM WHEN HE IS RIGHT AND PART/WITH HIM WHEN HE GOES WRONG/ABRAHAM LINCOLN (Base back:) THAT IT MAY NOT BE FORGOTTEN/THAT HERE FOR NINETEEN YEARS/AS A LAWYER AND FRIEND HE WAS/COUNSELOR AND TEACHER OF OUR/FOREFATHERS THIS STATUE IS/ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF/DEWITT COUNTY TO THE MEMORY OF/ABRAHAM LINCOLN/DEDICATED NOV 11 1931 (Base side:) CLARK BROS/CONTRACTORS/CLINTON signed Founder's mark appears.

The statue resides at the NW corner of the square, which is dedicated to Lincoln and features numerous other Lincoln related markers. The square was formerly called the City Courthouse lawn.

I had no idea when I arrived that this was the location of the "You can fool all the people..." speech and I found it very moving to be in the place where such profound words were spoken.

Albert Louis Van den Berghen was a Chicago area sculptor.
