"Gules on a Bend Or a Bear Sable passant langued armed and viriled of the first." (Flags of the world)
According to popular etymology Bern is named after the bear, there is a tale that Berchtold V. von Zähringen decided to name his new founded town after the first animal caught in the surroundings, this was a bear. Although the name is more probably of Celtic origin and all those stories are not true, bears are very important here and you can find them all over town. It is also in the flag of the city, the county and the canton Bern.
New Bern NC has an almost identical flag; the only difference is the missing virile part.
