It is not clearly known why the caves hold the name "Baraceve", but it´s believed that the name comes from history, when Hungarian soldiers had been hidden in the woods near caves and have found that local people have sympathy for them and are friendly (in hungarian barátságos = friendly). Another legend dates the history of the name to Turkish invasion time. According to the oral tradition of the local people, a person with a surname Barac fought heroically and defeated a raging Turkish giant near the caves therefore the caves were in his honour named after him.
First written reference about Baraceve caves comes from 1699 from the topograpic map of croatian-turkish border. In 1874, I. T. Brunek published his work "Die Wassernoth im Karste" which started the interest about caves. Not so long after, in 1892, Baraceve caves were first opened to public. Although that caves had been object of many research works, they had been subsequently abandoned and lately forgotten thanks to the beginning of World War II. In july 2004 the caves were reopened to visitors.
