Burntside Lake’s Hoist Bay holds an historical treasure, a rusted logging tub boiler known as “Bull-of-the-Woods.” Abandoned by the Weyerhauser Timber Company, this steam scow is a remnant of the former lumbering period of the region, used to move the logs through the waters of the lake. Burntside Lake is northwest of Ely, and the bay can best be reached by Wolf Lake Road boat access. The relic is tucked back in the bay, and the top sticks up out of the water a couple of feet to get one’s attention. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Note: This is a boat-in-only waymark.
