Francis Hoffman - Joliet, IL - Silhouette Public Art Sculptures on Waymarking.com

Nestled against bluffs which were once mined, a set of silhouettes give us a glimpse of life in early 19th century Joliet. This one, depicts a kneeling stone mason with his trowel.
The accompanying placard reads:

STONE MASONS

FRANCIS HOFFMAN

In 1860 Hoffman worked
as one of Joliet's many stone
masons. Born in Holland,
the forty-year-old, Hoffman
first came to Wisconsin
before moving to Joliet.
His wife Agnes was also born
in Holland, but their four
children were born in the U.S.
Stone masons took the
quarried limestone
and transformed it
into magnificent
buildings, many
of which are still
part of Joliet's
landscape.
