As you drive east on Route 66 from the Oklahoma City/Edmond area, about 14 miles (one mile west of the town of Luther), a one-half mile section of the original Route 66 pavement runs northeast off the north side of the current roadway. A sign designates this as a private historical preservation site.
This section of the original Route 66 is owned by Dale Liles of Bethany, OK. His goal is to preserve the existence of this portion of history. His web site (
visit link) describes the roadway and offers ownership of one-foot square portions of the road at a cost of $66.00. Another web site of Mr. Liles indicates that due to health reasons, he is willing to sell the entire remaining unsold portion to someone wishing to continue this process, to preserve this treasure of U.S. history. The pavement has grass and trees right up to the edges, and end on the east is a chain link fence and a sign indicating that the bridge is out. It makes an interesting side-trip to take a few minutes and drive down this stretch of history.
