Eldon Lyon Park is located two blocks west of Rockwell Avenue on N.W. 36th Street. The park is open from 6AM to 10PM. Entering from the south on a divided drive, you first pass large open grassy areas, perfect for games of Frisbee, and flying kites. There are two large playgrounds which include the "Big Hill" with its shallow and steep areas for running and playing, and in the Winter, sledding.
A 1-1/4 mile walking and jogging trail runs the perimeter of the park. There are two full-court basketball courts, four baseball fields and nine softball fields. Two picnic pavilions with rest rooms are available, and a total of thirty picnic tables.
The park is a mecca for bird watchers, and a fitness program called Operation Boot Camp meets in the park at 7:00PM near the pavilions. On the west side of the park, St. Joseph's Cemetery, originally affiliated with the Oklahoma Orphanage can still be seen. a fence has been removed, and only a few headstones remain. The City has erected a large granite monument memorializing those buried here who were affiliated with the orphanage years ago.
These 60 acres are the site of the City's annual Freedom Festival on the 4th of July. A parade ends in the park, and the afternoon is filled with festivities, including a car show, carnival, craft booths and food galore.
