The local Lions Club was responsible for calling attention to and preserving this burial site for one of the town's original son's in the town's churchyard cemetery, helping to create this monument and marking it with a metal plaque.

The grave site is a brick wall (freestanding) and attached bench with the headstone inside of it and the marker at the top of the monument and next to the road and directly across the street from the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, located at the center of town, inside the town rotary along the Lincoln Highway.
The headstone reads: FOUNDER OF ABBOTTSTOWN PA. OLDEST TOWN IN ADAMS COUNTY. PA."HERE LIES THE BODY OF JOHN ABBETT WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE FEBRUARY 19 1786. AGED 86 YEARS 1 MONTH 11 DAYS". HUSBAND OF ALICE. CAME TO ADAMS COUNTY AROUND 1735 FROM BERWICKSHIRE SCOTLAND. SETTLED ALONG WHAT IS NOW BEAVER CREEK. (HIGHWAY 30), BUILT HIS HOUSE AND OPENED A TAVERN IN 1750.
