Deception Pass was named by Captain George Vancouver June 10,1792, feeling that he had been deceived. He thought this to be a natural passage way inland around a peninsula instead of surrounding an island.

After being so "deceived" he named the island Whidbey Island after his trusted officer Joseph Whidbey. Whidbey Island is the 2nd largest island in the contiguous 48 states.
