When the United States declared war against Germany in 1917, it was the first time they would send soldiers overseas to fight on foreign land. During World War I, the American Expeditionary Forces was created in France when Gen. Joe Pershing became supreme commander of the U. S. armed forces. An estimated 60000 vehicles saw service with the AEF including 15000 Model T trucks.
When the U.S. Marines left for France, they were issued no vehicles except for a Model T Ford truck which had been donated by three women. The truck was named the 'Elizabeth Ford' and it was used for transporting supplies and ammo to the front lines and evacuating the wounded.
A restored Model T truck representing the 'Elizabeth Ford' is on display in the WWI gallery of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA.
