In June of 1866, John and his wife Kirsti and friends Jonas and Anne Nelson set out in two oxen drawn wagons for Dakota Territory. They arrived June 29, at Fort Dakota located near the Big Sioux River in what is now downtown Sioux Falls. Learning it was unlawful to have a homestead within 70 square miles of a military reservation they decided to move north along the river until they came to Sverdrup Township near Renner. The pair became the first permanent settlers in Minnehaha County. Their daughter was the first white child born in the county also.
