The building was built in 1876 as a library in this textile mill town. After the library closed the Pawtuxet Valley Preservation and Historical Society leased building from the town in 1993. This historical society repaired and restored the building. Along with being the headquarters for the historical society the building also houses hundreds of artifacts and documents on display.
