In operation since 1913, the ferry was initially known as the Munson Ferry until 1966 when it was renamed in honour of an early homesteader. Andre Bleriot. His brother Louis, was the first man to cross the English Channel by flight. He did it in 1909.
The present vessel was built in 1997. It is powered by a diesel engine that drives a hydraulic motor that turns a drum pulling the ferry across the river by cable. It also has current boards that can use the river current to move the ferry in an emergency. The river needs to have a good flow though to have the current boards work properly. It is 27.6 metres in length, 10.36 metres wide and has a depth of 1.37 meters.
The ferry has a load capacity is 62,000Kg which translates into a capacity of 1 crew, 99 passengers and 13 mid sized cars. The length of the crossing is 105 metres and can be done in about 2 to 3 minutes.
There is no charge.
