The old and abandoned village ‘le Chastelas' was the cradle of Grospierres. It was built on a promontory and provided a panoramic viewpoint above the Chassezac valley. It was composed of a fortress and a pioneer church. The church was abandoned and destroyed in 1591 during the French Wars of Religion. From the 19th century, the inhabitants of ‘le Chastelas’ decided to move to the Chassezac valley and benefited in this way from advantages such as water and railway. Today, the association ‘Renaissance du Chastelas’ refurbishes a part of the old village.
