The Old North Church is famous because it is the place where the signal lanterns, hung in the church steeple, were used to inform Paul Revere that the British were coming. Inside the church, in the left aisle at the front is a bust of George Washington. What makes this bust unique is the brass plaque on a column to the right.
It is inscribed:
General Lafayette,
standing here in 1824
and looking at the bust
of Washington, said "Yes
that is the man I knew
and more like him than
any other portrait."
This then, if Lafayette is to be believed, is what George Washington actually looked like.
The plaque under the bust is inscribed:
This bust of
George Washington
was presented to
Christ Church
by
Shubael Bell, Warden
1815
The official name for The Old North Church is Christ Church in the City of Boston. It was built in 1723, and is the oldest church building in Boston.
