The property was the main building of the California Cotton Mill. The factory started in 1883 and at its height employed over 1,500 people. The factory provided an economic boost for the Fruitvale neighborhood. The factory produces such products as upholstery and mops

With the construction of the highway in the mid 1900s, the factory was cut into two. The factory finally closed on June 30, 1954.
