Rio Grande University was originally founded in 1873 as a training ground for Baptist ministers and teaches, and now occupies a campus of 190 acres in the rural farmland of southeastern Ohio, offering a wide variety of academic programs to 2,300 students. There are academic programs in the nursing and allied health fields, technology and communication, and education among others, and a unique Welch studies center. It is no longer affiliated with the Baptist church. The school maintains a faculty to student ratio of 1:15, and maintains a vigorous athletic program, especially in basketball and soccer.
