The Colfax town hall is a single-story wood frame structure on a concrete foundation.
The township was organized in June, 1871. It was originally called Lake Prairie. In September, 1871, the town was renamed in honor of the Vice President of the United States, Schuyler Colfax.
The township had a population of 557 at the 2000 Census.
