Hill City is located in Pennington County, South Dakota, on US Highway 385. Its population in July of 2009 was 927, reflecting an increase from the 2000 census by 19%.
The main industry in Hill City is tourism, with Mt. Rushmore within quick driving distance. A secondary industry is logging.
The town was incorporated on April 21, 1945 and is the oldest existing city in Pennington County.
