In Northampton, behind Norhtampton City Hall, is a complex building with a cylindrical portion. This building, now used as a commercial or residence, is known as the Gasworks Building or the Gas Co. Roundhouse.
The building is made of brick and currently has several windows. There are at least three entrances - one at parking lot level, one, off to one side that is a few feet below street level, and one off the back. There are other entrances off the other part of the building. The cylindrical portion has a conical roof, which is topped by a weathervane that has the word "Gas" incorporated into the design.
The door out to the parking lot has a plaque by it. It states:
"The Gasworks
Built in 1856 as a gas holder and gas processing facility for the city of Northampton - restored in in 1986 by Robert C. Curran, Civil Engineer and native of Northampton. It is one of seven such existing structures in the U.S. and its restoration has brought statewide recognition.
The gasworks was his last and most cherished project.
This plaque is placed in his memory
Robert C. Curran
1933 - 1987"
