Around the base of the shaft are four statues representing the infantry, artillery, cavalry, and navy. Total height of the monument is seventyfive feet. Located in Hackley Park, Muskegon, it is the work of the sculptor Joseph Carabelli. It was a gift to the city from Charles H. Hackley and was dedicated on May 30, 1892. The inscription reads:
Not conquest but peace and a united people. To the soldiers and sailors who fought, and to all patriotic men and women who helped to preserve our nation in the War of the Rebellion.
